Canon Powershot Camera

A great introduction to the Canon Powershot camera range

Canon Powershot Camera

The Canon Powershot camera is an exciting range of compact digital cameras designed to suit everyone from the point-and-shoot amateur to the serious amateur, and even the semi-professional photographer.

Each Powershot camera benefits from the latest technical developments in image processing, on-board software, LCD screens, lenses and sensors and a host of other technologies including image stabilization and High Definition (HD) video recording and playback.

Canon has divided its range of Powershot cameras into several Series; each Series geared towards a specific type of user.  As such, each Series uses a different blend of advanced technologies to deliver the ideal photographic performance for its target users for a given price point in the market.

The Powershot range is divided into the following:

Powershot A: This series of cameras has 3 models in the range. They truly define the smart, handheld compact digital camera and will suit the point-and-shoot amateur extremely well. The A1200 which sits in the middle of the range offers its user a 12.1 Megapixel sensor, a 28mm 4x optical zoom lens, Smart Auto and Easy operating modes. It also benefits from Face Detection and auto Red-Eye correction technologies and will even shoot 720p HD video.

Powershot A-IS: The A-IS Series is a step up from the simpler yet perfectly capable A Series.  A big plus for the A-IS Series is that the camera body is made from metal; making is more robust than its A Series sisters. Both of the A-IS cameras in this Series offer a 16 Megapixel sensor for greater detail and larger prints. The 28mm lens has a 5x optical zoom, compared with 4x for the A Series.  While still capable of shooting 720p HD video, video capture is enhanced with Dynamic IS (an Image Stabilization technology) for improved image quality; all of these features making the A-IS Series a great compact digital camera for the keen amateur.

Powershot D10: This is a stand-alone camera within Powershot range.  The D10 has some unique features that will definitely appeal to the sports-adventure minded photographer. The camera is both waterproof and shockproof making it an ideal companion for outdoor pursuits, and will operate in temperatures as low as -10 degrees C.  It offers a 12.1 Megapixel sensor, a 3x optical zoom with Image Stabilization and has both Motion and Face Detection technologies built-in making action photos easier to capture.

Powershot SX-IS: This is Canon’s broadest range of Powershot camera, especially when you include the HS Series.  There are 3 cameras in this Series, the SX130 IS, the SX150 IS, and the SX210 IS.  All of these cameras are a step-up from the Powershot A and A-IS Series, and are ideal for the keen amateur, and even the serious photographer as a handy second camera.  All 3 cameras offer full manual control, giving the photographer full creative control over their images. The SX210 IS offers its user a 12x zoom 28mm lens with a 14.1 Megapixel sensor.  It is able to shoot 720p HD video with stereo sound, and like all the SX IS cameras offers full manual control.

Powershot SX-HS: This range comprises 2 cameras; the SX220 HS and the SX230 HS.  While both cameras have similar specifications and waterproof cases, the SX230 HS includes a GPS function, while both offer a 12.1 Megapixel sensor and 14x zoom with Dynamic IS (Image Stabilization).

Canon also offers 2 Powershot cameras that are more akin to digital SLR (Single Lens Reflex) cameras in their look and feel.  These cameras are the SX30 IS and the SX40 HS.

A further 3 cameras completes the Powershot line-up, these being the S95, S100 and G12 cameras.  It is these 3 compact cameras that are aimed at the professional/expert level of photographer, offering the ability to shoot using the RAW capture method for greater post-camera image processing using such software applications as Photoshop and the like.
